About the Surrounding Area

Maison Bátori Tarczal is an excellent base for exploring the area.

Let’s start with Tarcal itself. Here, of course, it’s worth visiting the outstanding local wineries such as Basilicus, Degenfeld, Kikelet, Majoros, Myrtus, and Simonfay. Wine tasting, meeting the winemaker, touring the estate, and, with a bit of luck, even a visit to the cellar – all of this is possible here!

A walk through the village offers the chance to see the two characteristic churches, the statue of the Blessing Jesus, interesting buildings in the center such as the synagogue, the Prefect’s House, the Sebeő Winery mansion, or the Királyudvar, as well as strolls along Könyves Kálmán’s “upper street.”

A little farther from the center are the picturesque St. Teresa chapel, the Jewish cemetery, and the lake in the former quarry.

For lovers of longer walks, a hike up Tokaj mountain is recommended: along the way, you can visit the burial site of the chieftain Turzul, after whom the village is named. Leaving the asphalt road, you can wander through the vineyards. Vineyards can also be reached by following paths through the ravines washed into the loess soil by water flowing down from the hill.

Further on, but still nearby at the foot of the same hill, are Tokaj and Bodrogkeresztúr. The rivers Cisa and Bodrog are close by, and you can explore them by boat, kayak, or canoe.

The entire Tokaj wine region is within reach of a short car trip. In addition to countless wineries, beautiful towns, and excellent restaurants, there are plenty of attractions for cultural tourism: castles in Sárospatak, Boldogkőváralja, and Fűzér; the Sárospatak library and college; the grave of the famous Rabbi Saje Steiner, a pilgrimage site for Jews from around the world; the 13th-century Church of the Holy Cross in Bodrogkeresztúr; and the Baroque synagogue in Mád. A bit farther afield are the Hungarian Language Museum in Széphalom, the site where the first Hungarian Bible was created in Vizsoly, and Monok, the birthplace of Kossuth. One must not forget the Hungarian Calvary in Sátoraljaújhely, commemorating Trianon.

There is also something for those who enjoy active recreation: the network of cycling paths is continuously expanding, making it increasingly easy to get around this way. Near Sárospatak, there is a lake in a former quarry (Megyerhegyi Tengerszem), with a via ferrata built into its walls, offering a unique way to experience this beautiful location. The Zemplén Adventure Park (Zempíni Kalandpark) in Sátoraljaújhely offers a range of attractions such as a ski lift, cable car, rope bridge between the mountains, ropes course, zip-line and bobsleigh track.

Not enough? Come visit us, and we’ll tell you about even more things!
